So I discovered that the original three seasons of MMPR is on Netflix. Upon finding this, I was clearly obligated to watch from the beginning. I have just gotten to the Green ranger mini series and want to record my thoughts as we go. To be clear, 10 year old me thought this was bad-ass. Without further ado, Green With Evil Part 1
the intro song starts out pretty metal.
I never understood the dressing in one colour thing. Maybe the secret heroes are the group of five kids who ALWAYS wear the same colours.
We begin with a martial arts expo.
Tommy wears nothing but green and does nothing but jump kicks...
Kimberly thinks he's dreamy.
Rita has a power coin for a new ranger and took 17 episodes to figure out that she should use it.
Jason vs Tommy.. the referee looks like he is going yachting after.
Uh oh... Tommy is way ahead.
phew... it was a draw.
Kimberly hears literal harps as she checks out the meat... I mean Tommy.
Later at school, Bulk and Skull hit on Kimberly... luckily green knight, Tommy is here to do the same jump kicks 12 times.
Kim and Tommy have negative on screen chemistry... but more harps so it must be love.
Rita casts a spell whose incantation is just saying what will happen.
NO TOMMY, not the back alley. Not alone!
Putties... Tommy dispatches them easily... by posing a lot?
Garbage can lid comes into play.. E C DUB E C DUB
Rita comes to earth to to take Tommy. And is already on a first name basis with him.
More "spells"
If Rita knows who the power rangers are, why doesn't she just take an ad in the Angel Grave Times?
Hmm Tommy can just teleport into Zordon's chamber, seems like a gaping security hole.
Wait... Zordon KNEW that there was a sixth coin? And that he could just enter the command centre? Lock it Zordon.
aaaaaaand Zordon is gone.
Time for giant Goldar.
Oh no! Teleporting is offline! Good thing we are cleaning our flying car, that we apparently had this whole time.
Alpha 5 is offline. Billy fixes it in about 11 seconds.
IT'S MORPHIN TIME
We have a Giant flying monkey but let's lead off with putty patrol... that will probably be successful.
Nope.
Now it's time for dinozords. Who by the way come from 5 completely different climates. Maybe just park them in Angel Grove? You need them literally every week.
Megazord activated. They go right for the power sword. Wise.
Goldar does air somersaults... it is ineffective.
The green ranger just casually breaks into the Megazord and takes it out.
5 on 1 battle now. Rangers use their numbers advantage to attack one at a time, neglecting to use weapons against the unarmed hostile ranger. Pink ranger is the first one to realize they have swords; promptly loses it.
Back in the command centre... seems like this green guy is super tough. He beat Jason...
And that's that. 4 more to go. Oh Lord...
Look! It's an Obvious Distraction!

Sometimes I still feel like I'm 20...
... then I see 20 year olds and realize that, no, I am definitely 30.
31 actually.
I went to the doctor yesterday to get my shoulder looked at. It has hurt for a while, but has recently gotten worse. Wife worries about me and my reluctance to get medical attention so she insisted I go see a doctor. I relented when I couldn't move my left arm one day...
The first words out of the doctors mouth were, "what did you do?" I felt inexplicable shame in saying that I didn't DO anything to it. I told him that it had hurt for a while, and with more shame than necessary I admitted I am in my thirties and so figure that sometimes things just hurt now. I expected a lecture about how things have a root cause and I shouldn't ignore them. His response was worse than I expected: he just nodded sagely.
One of the advantages of living in Peterborough is that there is a free newspaper, and that newspaper is where all the flyers are. Every week, Wife asks me if I want to save the flyers, and every week I become more enthusiastic in saying yes. I save them to read on Sunday morning, before church.
I guess the main thesis of this post is that if most men turn into their fathers at some point, I might be bypassing that and going straight to turning into my grandfather...

Difficulties
Today, as part of the program I am working at, we visited the Juravinksi Cancer Centre, in Hamilton. It was a tough day. We visited there two years ago as well, when I worked here, so I knew it would be a tough day.
Over the course of my increasingly medium length life, I have had many brushes with cancer. Anywhere from family members or friends surviving, to having scares involving loved ones. Topping it off was losing my grandmother to cancer a few years ago.
My grandmother, Betty was a life long smoker. She never got sick. She quit the day my nephew was born and got sick very soon after. The doctors did all they could but it wasn't enough. Betty died in February 13, 2010.
Betty was a fighter all her life and she fought until the very last day. My sister was pregnant when Gramma died and she insisted that she was going to live long enough to see that baby born. As hard as she fought, Betty Lou didn't make it. Elizabeth Louise was born the next September, named after my gramma.
For the last three years I've done all that I can to try prevent others from going through what my family went through, but the burden seems extra heavy on days like today...

Last Night: Lakers beat Six Nations
In a battle of the league's top two teams, the Peterborough Lakers beat the Six Nations Chiefs 11-9 in Major Series Lacrosse, last night. I didn't watch the game as it was an away contest (and I am working away from Peterborough), but the box score can be found here.
The Lakers won 14 of 22 faceoffs and out shot the Chiefs 44-35. Winning face-offs against Sid Smith is huge as he is one of the best in the game at the dot, but the lower shot differential tells me that Six Nations was taking it to Peterborough on loose balls and turn-overs; a concerning prospect if this were part of a seven game series. Full credit, though should go to the Lakers defense for holding off a dangerous offensive corp, not the least of which was keeping Cody Jamieson to 0 shots and just one assist.
John Grant has a 6 point night, again proving how valuable he is to this team.
Despite the concerning possession stats, a win is a win. Doing against a powerhouse team like the Chiefs only makes it sweeter. The Lakers play in Brampton tonight to finish up for the week.

The "Hard Open"
I'm going to be honest: I created this blog to help me get a job. The real inaugural post (think of it as a soft open), below, is the result of that. I got the job, so that's awesome.
This is actually my second foray into the world of being a public figure, online. I used to write for a website called Useless Yellow Box. It was run by my high school chums, Ken and Adam. I won the first ever Friend of the Month contest... by which I mean I was the first one to agree to write a piece for them. I think reviewed a Big Sugar album. Hilarious. That eventually turned into a semi-regular gig with me writing whatever I felt like writing. I was recently thinking about that and I went searching for the UYB. It's long gone (thanks, Homestead) but Ken has a tumblr or some such with the name. That started the itch, and here I am, writing this at 11:30 at night, in a residence room that I live in this month.
It's just now occurring to me that I was at one time somewhat cutting edge on this whole blogging thing. Now I'm about 10 years behind. That's really cool to think about... the cutting edge, not the being behind.
As for what to expect... I don't know. I could find a cool niche and become internet famous... or more likely this could be the second last post I ever make. I like lots of stuff and I like making my opinion known, so that seems like a recipe for internet success. I guess we'll have to see.
Some stuff about me. I'm 30. I'm married. She's way out of my league. I am a math teacher. No one can tell when I'm being sarcastic. I have no short term memory, but an excellent long term memory. Most things I think are only interesting to me. Finally, I'm an evidently bad writer, so this should be fun!

Sports Statistics for Shad@MAC 2013
As a long time sports fan as well as along time statistics fan, I have developed a keen interest in sport analytics. Originally coined "moneyball" in Major League Baseball (Wikipedia entry on the original Moneyball), managers in many of North America's profesional sports leagues have turned to similar advanced statistical analysis to try and get the most value out of players and create efficient teams. One sport which has, in my opinion, not received a sufficient treatment of advanced statistics is box lacrosse (hereafter: Lacrosse).
